Brief History
Our Club was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hobart.
The Rotary International Charter was granted on the 2nd of January 1965 and presented as the "Rotary Club of Hobart South"
at the inaugural meeting on the 20th of February 1965 at Wrest Point Hotel.
Membership at charter was 28. One of those charter members, Dick Crawford, is still an active member of the club.
The club's current membership is 32 (28 males and 4 females).

Club portrait of HM The Queen was painted and presented to the club by Rev. Alf Reynolds. This was damaged during moves between venues and Alf then painted the present portrait.

Dine-With-The-Stars event raised $46,000. This year’s project was jointly organised with the Variety Club of Tasmania and the proceeds split between the two service organisations. Master of Ceremonies was “Today” host Steve Liebman.

 

Rotarian Helen Holmes received the Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Club meetings moved from the Asian Room (closed by Wrest Point) to ‘Pier One’

 

Sir Guy Green, Governor of Tasmania was the guest speaker at the World Understanding Night held on the 24th of February.

The Club hosted the GSE team from Eastern Kentucky.

$5000 donated to Sailability to help construct 2 yachts for use by the disabled community.

Foundation of a Mentoring Programme with Taroona High School for “at risk” students.

 

$5000 donated to RAWCS housing project for participation in FAIM activities for construction of housing.

Fortieth Anniversary celebrated with planting seven oak trees in Fitzroy Gardens with commemorative plaque.

Marshalling duty at 3 triathlons raised $xxx for the Club.

The Club supported the District’s Emergency Medicine Information Booklet project and distributed booklets in the Sandy Bay / South Hobart area through local businesses.

 

Past President Arthur Orchard and wife Jill assist with building cyclone-proof housing in Fiji through FAIM.
